Procedure

Anyone wishing to be exempted from compulsory health insurance in Switzerland must submit an application for this. The SVA Zurich is responsible for examining applications in the canton of Zurich. 

Once you have submitted your application, we will notify your local authority of your application. You don't need to do anything else. We will then process your application for exemption from the compulsory health insurance.  Applications currently take around 5 months to process. We'll inform your local authority of the decision

Provide supporting documents in advance: The supporting documents that need to be submitted depend on the reason for or status of residence in Switzerland. The table under «Who can be exempted?» provides an overview.
